I’m currently skiing in Geilo and finding the Norwegian ski instructors, staff in the hotel and people in general friendly and welcoming. I did learn a few words of the language before I came out and, although I’m no where near fluent, I find it does go down well if you’ve made a bit of an effort to learn the basics. Perhaps it’s because I’m in a region that relies on tourism but in all fairness the Norwegians I’ve come across have been very pleasant. Based on this trip I did wonder what it would be like to live here hence me stumbling across this blog. Quite disappointed on hearing some of the comments but glad to be hearing all of your experiences.

As norwegian living in Uk now, i must say Norway isnt worth it. There are ofcourse some good things but many are bad. Norwegians are silentntly racist, thinks they are perfect people from all aspect, boring, mostly jobs are given first to thier own etnisk norwegians and then to immigrant norwegians, faces are rude and unfriendly. u will never see a smile. barnevern is shit after what i have experienced and dont listen to people saying no they arent bec u will know them once u get the trouble with them regards ur kids and at the end u will get an apology when they finds out they were wrong. Health system is free but shit and even Romania emergency and ambulance system is way faster and better than Norway. Norwegians always thinks about saving and about thier piggy banks, hahha, even most of them earns 50+ as a couple and u wont see them enjoying breakfast or dinner in a restaurant. coffe shops are full with students with having just a hot or cold drink, nothing else. In winter they will go for ski and in summer they will go for hytte tur, on mountain or fishing. I am really happy in Uk even it is not the best place. I do go out for breakfast with friends and families twice a months and having dinners in big restaurants once a month. People are always talkative and helps u if u have a problem. I have my neighbour from ukrania, iraq and ireland and we always help eachother in emergency and arent afraid to knock at eachothers door even in the middel of night. U can never expect that in Norway from etnisk and immigrant norwegians. They will send u in jail for that, welll. I dont care about weather bec at the end u will get use to it. Jobs is way hard to get and again first etnisk norwegians. Studies are free but u will have to pay all the money back but can get some discounts if u pass exam. I also find etnisk norwegian annoying when it comes to thier history and culture as they are so proud that it can sometimes make them ignorant/ arrogant people. For eksemple: if u wear thier norwegian dress on 17 mai, they will like u alot and if not then u are just utlending. They can talk hours about who made the dress, who owned it from grannies and all, how it was made and much does it costs and etc etc. U will never get long life friendship in Norway as mostly friendship is with thier own family and with thier piggy banks. And the last u aint norwegian if u dont like kvikklunj chockolate which is same as kitkat and then brown cheese. Also u need to be quite mentally strong to shut thier mouths because as i said many are rude and will always try to give u hard time. If u still think u can live a life then pack ur bags and move to Norway.

I live a simple life in West Cornwall, England which is frequently windy and wet. It was a beautiful place to live but with population levels increasing I feel pushed out. From what I understand from this post, Norway offers the simple hygge life that I want to enjoy with the additional bonus of real seasons. Quality of life is extremely important to me. I would like think that Norway can offer the clean living I enjoy. I have no faith in the UK any more. It has been ruined in many ways. I have started learning Norwegian and aim to visit with a view to moving. I have indirect family in Norway and hope this might aid immigration and apparently ancestors from Tromso. Appreciate all the comments above which help to provide a more balanced opinion… more research required!! Thank you David Nickel for creating.

In reply to Vegard. "..parents/guardians version written in a very emotional state". What would you expect from people whose child was brutally separated from the family for no good reason? Barnevernet is a GREAT concern. They take away children on a slightest excuse inflicting a life-long trauma on both the children and the parents. I would never ever move to Norway with my kids after hearing and reading all the stories about Barnevernet by people from various countries.

In reply to MissSunshine. Barnevernet is actually one of the reasons I am thinking of moving to Norway (or Sweden). I grew up in France, and if the social services there had done their job, I should have been taken away from my mother, and she would have ended up in jail (her sentence would have been a minimum of 10 years, however she would only have done half of it...) or in a psychiatric asylum. I follow the news, it's one scandal after another (regarding Jeffrey Epstein, a lawyer commented that France is a paradise for paedophiles), there have been a few positive changes (there is no longer a face to face confrontation between the children and their abusers, for instance) but it's still not a good place for children... or women.

In reply to Sheila. I was told by other Norwegians that they are not racist, however, many do not like Muslims, ie the religion. From what they see happening in England, France and Sweden(rape capital of Europe) they don't want the same thing to happen in their country.

I take it you have left the country long ago? or are you perhaps unemployed sustained by the genereous wealfare system (financed by all of us taxpayers) that allows you not to work and sit home and moan over the internet? I gather the later is the case....
