At the time, there was no train to Myrdal. Stunning scenery you cannot see any other way. Grueling initial climb out of Flåm, but pretty easy-going once up on Hardangervidda. I believe the trail is still there, and Myrdal is only half as far as Finse. Could probably do it in a couple of days. There were hostels to overnight in along the way.
