I think you need to look into what citizenship actually is. Generally speaking, you have to have lived and worked in Norway for at least seven years, pass language exams, and prove you’ve been a taxpayer for that period of time. The citizenship exam alone does not equal citizenship! Also, the permanent residence is not a test, it’s a form of residence permit, and again, that’s only available to people who have lived in Norway a certain number of years generally on work permits. You can find information about this on this website or at UDI.no.

I’m looking to get my dual citizenship with Norway (US citizen) through ancestry but don’t have plans to live there until another 10 years (life changes quickly so keep options open!). I don’t even care if becoming a citizen would take me a decade, I would do it! What is the order of testing I should focus on? Do I do the permanent residence permit first, then citizenship test? Any guidance on my long journey ahead would be greatly appreciated ❤️

Aside of that social studies test. For permanent residency. You need to take 500 hrs norwegian language on the municipality where you leave here in Norway and passed the A2 level exam. And you should have earn a salary of 300 thousand krone within 3 years you stay in Norway and shouldn’t be away from Norway of more than 7 months in that 3 years of stay. That 300 thousand krone requirements could be exempted .If you are studying in university or in highschool.

The statsborgerprøve (citizenship test) is only relevant for citizenship, not residence permits.

It’s of pretty academic interest for me currently, I’m from the UK and I’d currently jumping through the UDI and VFS’s hoops to get a residence permit, as I’m hoping to marry my fiance and move to Oslo later this year. Fingers crossed for it all going smoothly!
By the time the required seven years of residence are up, I should have had enough time to master grammatical irregularities, and learned what I need to eventually apply for dual citizenship.
I might even learn to eat lutefisk in more than a 50:50 lutefisk to bacon ratio, but I won’t hold my breath for that…

The language exams are linked in the article. But you can’t learn Norwegian in the UK and expect to get citizenship. To get citizenship you must have been living in Norway with valid residence permits for (usually) at least seven years. I suggest you spend some time on to understand how immigration works.

Do you know what Norwegian language exams are needed to gain citizenship and where I can learn. I live in UK and would need to study online. Is there a syllabus I can download.?
Many thanks

No, the exams must be done in Norwegian. Besides this, you need Norwegian language exams to apply for citizenship anyway.
